Writing Contests

Here are the sponsored contests for the 2018 Writers Conference.

Enter as many as you like.

It’s that time of year again: We are preparing for our fall conference — the 23rd Annual Writers Conference — and we have announced the 2018 Writers Contests.

This year we feature 18 contests, including several new ones. It’s not to early to submit your work! This page has all the information you need.

NOTE: Contest rules are located at the bottom of the page. 

Unless otherwise noted, contests awards include:
$25 First Place.
$15 Second Place.
$10 Third Place.

2018 Writing Contests

1. White County Creative Writers Award:
Senior Citizen Romance, 3000 word max.
Awards: $50 First Place / $30 Second Place / $20 Third Place.
Sponsor: White County Creative Writers.

2. Carolyn Sanders Memorial Award:
Fact or fiction story about an overwhelmed caregiver in a difficult situation. Correct format counts, description helps. 2500-word max. First place also receives matching $25 donation to the charity of your choice. (Specify charity of choice in upper right header.)

3. Del Garrett’s Gimme the Creeps Award:
1500-word max. Psychological Horror. Twilight Zone short story. Indicate if you agree to being published. (no extra pay)

4. RobertsFamilyArk Award:
Poetry, any subject, any form. 24-line max.
Sponsor: Rhonda Roberts.

5. Roots:
Essay, 1200-word max. Is there an oft-repeated phrase, or unusual food for birthday or holiday, or an annual activity that has become part of your family’s traditions? Tell the origin and how it has become part of your family’s life.

6. Gin Creek Poetry Award:
A rondeau poem. Any subject.

7. Grandma Dot Award:
Children’s story for non-readers. 500-word max. Needs to have a message or moral, but not sappy or preachy.

8. It’s a Terzanelle!
Look it up. Write one. Any Subject.

9. Take Me Away Award:
Take me on your favorite road trip. Non-fiction essay about your favorite road trip. Be descriptive, make me want to see what you saw. 1500-word max.

10. The How-To Contest:
Tell us step-by-step how to master any process, from building a rocket, to boiling water, finding inner peace, your choice. 1000 words or less.

11. Make it Count Award:
A Nonet poem, any subject.

12. Zippy Kids Award:
Childhood adventures while seeking one of the Arkansas lost treasure legends, and a lesson learned. 1000 min – 2500 max words.
Sponsor: The Wantulok Family/Zippy Kids.

13. Whodunnit? Award:
Short story featuring an amateur detective who solves a murder (E.g., Miss Marple, Jessica Fletcher). Sleuth must not be a cop or other professional investigator. 2500-word max. No erotica or profanity.

14. Lovepat Press Award:
Sonnet, any subject. 14 lines. List type of sonnet beneath the title. $25; $15; $10; $5, $5, $5. (3 HM’s awarded)

15. Upon Reflection:
Humorous fantasy short story. 2500-word max. Protagonist discovers s/he can see the future in various reflective surfaces, and tries to change the future. BRIEF critique given if requested on 1st page.

16. Write it Right:
Newspaper article. A reporter must cover a moonshine festival for a local paper in a DRY county. 500-word max.
Sponsor: Penpoint Writers Group.

17. The Kitchen Sink Award:
Short prose, any subject. 1500-word max.
Sponsor: Vernon-Rodgers Tales.

18. Pitch Perfect:
Give us your best elevator pitch, with emphasis on your hook. Submit a brief pitch of your work, any genre, either existing or proposed, for a brief critique. 100-word max.
Sponsor: White County Creative Writers.
(No publishing, no prize money, just a critique.)

CONTEST REGULATIONS

1. Conference registration does not include contest fees.
Contest fees of $5.00 for the first entry and $3.00 for each additional entry thereafter. Must be mailed on or before July 27, 2018. Total your entry fees and make one check payable to White County Creative Writers.

No fees returned. Winners not attending will be notified by mail one week after the conference.
WCCW is not responsible for manuscripts lost, delayed, or received too late for judging.
Do not send SASE: No entries will be returned. Entries will be destroyed two weeks after conference.

3. Only one typed, unpublished manuscript may be entered in each contest.
Double-space prose; poetry may be double-spaced or single-spaced. Use standard manuscript form.

4. No entry may be entered in more than one contest.
No one may enter the contest for which he or she serves as sponsor, chairman, or judge. Non- compliance with any rules will result in a disqualified entry.

5. Put contest number and name of award in upper left corner of each manuscript.
Show word/line count in upper right corner. Do not put your name on the manuscript. Attach a cover sheet to each manuscript with (a) number and name of contest, (b) title of entry, (c) first line of entry, and (d) your name, mailing address, and telephone number.

6. Prizes and other considerations.
Unless otherwise noted, awards for each contest are:
$25 First Place
$15 Second Place
$10 Third Place.
Honorable Mentions are awarded at judges’ discretion.
