Getting Off to a Great Start

We hear it at every turn: “Grab the reader from the first sentence.” And while that’s undeniably true, it’s about much more than the first sentence. It’s about the first paragraph, the first page, and even the first chapter. These firsts are your one chance to tell the reader, “You’re going to want to stay.”

A compelling beginning doesn’t need to be loud or flashy. But it does need to intrigue. It needs to be real. It needs to make the reader want to stick with your story long enough to turn a page or two.

Think of it this way:

The first sentence starts the conversation.

The first paragraph sets the tone.

The first page builds trust.

The first chapter promises a reason to stay.

At the April meeting, we’ll explore how to make these firsts count.
